Jet Lag

Jet Lag is caused by flying across different time zones, usually when there is a 3 to 4 hour time difference between local departure and arrival times. The body can take several days to adjust or catch up. This affects things like sleep and eating patterns, which can be disrupted, due to the body’s internal rhythms being out of sync with the day-night cycle of the traveller’s destination.

Treatment

Melatonin can be used to treat Jet Lag. Melatonin is a pineal hormone, produced naturally in the brain that regulates and realigns your body rhythms with the prevailing local time zone. Most people will adjust to their time zone after a few days, melatonin simply speeds this process up.
Our doctors can provide you with a free online consultation for Jet Lag, and if suitable can prescribe Melatonin.

How effective is melatonin?

While melatonin is not licensed for the treatment of Jet Lag, there is evidence that it can in fact help alleviate the symptoms of Jet Lag, as long as there is a time difference of at least 3 hours between the UK and your destination.
Melatonin is particularly effective if travelling in an Easterly direction and if you have experienced Jet Lag on previous journeys.

What are the side effects?

Melatonin can cause nausea and diarrhoea, or less frequently, headaches, stomach and back pain and a sore throat.
