Genital Herpes

Caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), genital herpes causes painful blisters on or around the genitals, but can affect any mucous membrane such as the moist linings of the eyes and the mouth. It is classed as a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) as it can be passed to others during sexual intercourse.
Genital Herpes affects people predominantly within the 20 to 25 years age range. Many people who contract HSV are unaware that they have the infection, as few if any signs can be present initially. The virus can then lie dormant for years until certain events provide a trigger point.
What are the different types of herpes?
Genital herpes:
· Sores and blisters around the genitals, buttocks, thighs and anus

Shingles (herpes zoster virus)
Cold sores
What treatment options are available?
Genital Herpes is classed as a chronic condition and as such has no cure. It can however be managed and controlled by the use of Anti-Viral medicines.
Common anti-viral treatments include Valtrex, Aciclovir and Famvir. As well as providing relief from symptoms, these medications can also reduce the length of time that the virus is active. These treatments should ideally be taken within 2 to 3 days of symptoms showing.
