Contraception
Over 3 million women across the UK use some form of oral contraceptive pill. There are currently nearly 30 different types of contraceptive pill available, the most common ones being Cilest, Microgynon and Yasmin.
How does oral contraception work?
The Combined Oral Contraceptive pill (COC), usually referred to as “The Pill” works primarily by stopping the maturation and release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation). Using a combination of 2 hormones (oestrogen and progestogen) contraceptive pills also work by making it harder for the sperm to enter the womb by thickening the cervical mucus and thinning the lining of the womb, making it less receptive to the implanting of an embryo.
The COC pill is one of the most effective methods of contraception. When taken correctly, less than 1 woman out of a 1000 taking the COC pill for a year, will get pregnant.
What are the benefits of oral contraception?
“The Pill” has proven itself to be nearly 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and combined with the ease of use and the minimal side effects, is the preferred choice of contraception for women everywhere.
In addition to preventing pregnancy the pill also helps with painful or heavy periods and premenstrual syndrome.
What are the side effects?
Women using the contraceptive pill for the first time can experience some side effects. These are usually mild and should pass quickly.
Side effects can include:
· Breakthrough bleeding and spotting - especially during the first 3 months of taking,
· Sickness or nausea
· Headaches
· Breast sensitivity or tenderness
· Mood swings
· Minor weight gains
